Australian bee species

Australian bee species

There are many species of native bees in Australia ranging from solitary to semi-social to social, but the ones that we immediately think of when somebody mentions bees are the social bees.  These are the bees that live in a large community and work collectively to keep the hive operational.

Of the social bees, there are around 11 species of native stingless bees in australia.  The most commonly kept species in south east Queensland are Tetragonula Carbonaria, Tetragonula Hockingsi and Austroplebeia Australis.
